WO Neitz Memorial Scholarship (annual)
Wilhelm Neitz Memorial Scholarship in Parasitology for postgraduate study abroad.
The late Prof Anna Verster, whose entire professional career was devoted to Veterinary Parasitology, repeatedly expressed concern that financial constraints might prevent young South African parasitologists from studying abroad. Under the stipulations of her will, the Wilhelm Neitz Memorial Trust (Who was Dr. Wilhelm Neitz?) was created to assist South African nationals or permanent residents for post-graduate study in parasitology (not only in the veterinary field) at institutions abroad. Honours, master's doctoral and post-doctoral study will qualify. As the amount available will not cover the total costs of study abroad, it is imperative that applicants should seek other sources of funding, e.g. NRF bursaries.
Applications should include the following:
1. A curriculum vitae
2. A certified academic record, including undergraduate studies
3. Detailed outline of the field of study or research project
4. Letter of support by employer or most recent academic supervisor
5. Details of how the proposed study will be financed.
The deadline for applications is 31 July 2010.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Applications, in duplicate, should be addressed to:
| Prof. Banie L. Penzhorn Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases Faculty of Veterinary Science University of Pretoria Private Bag X04 Onderstepoort 0110 South Africa |
Tel: +27 (0)12 529-8253 Fax: +27 (0)12 529-8312 Email: banie.penzhorn@up.ac.za |
The trustees are the President of the Parasitological Society of Southern Africa (ex officio) and one of the lecturers in Parasitology at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria (nominated by the Dean). The decision of the Trustees is final, and no correspondence concerning the decision will be entered into. The Trustees reserve the right not to award the Scholarship if, in their opinion, the applications do not warrant it. Payment will only be made when proof is furnished of acceptance by a tertiary education institution abroad.
Elsdon-Dew Medal (annual)
The Parasitological Society of Southern Africa (PARSA) awards this medal on merit to individuals who add valuable contributions to parasitology in Africa. This award is named after R. Elsdon-Dew, one of the founders of PARSA. Motivated nominations, with a detailed curriculum vitae (4 copies), are called for and should be submitted confidentially to the PARSA secretary. Documents may be submitted before 6 May 2011 to the PARSA Secretary:

Junior and Senior WO Neitz Award (annual)
The Parasitological Society of Southern Africa confers two awards annually for a postgraduate (MSc and PhD) thesis in parasitology. These awards are named after Dr. Wilhelm Neitz. In short, the MSc or PhD thesis must have been accepted within the last 18 months by a tertiary institution. American Society of Parasitologists
Dear PARSA members,
The American Society of Parasitologists (ASP) is anxious
to contact our distinguished colleagues to encourage increased communication
among parasitologists around the world. It is our goal to invite our colleagues
to become aware of the resources offered by ASP and share with us their programs
and activities.
The ASP web site is http://asp.unl.edu/ .
Please take a chance to look at the various features available such as the Newsletter
and links to careers in parasitology and the educational, systematic and medical
resources. We also have information on the activities of our society and links
to numerous affiliated societies. The ASP is a diverse and inclusive group in
both membership and the research interests of it members. We are making a special
effort to invite international students to share with us their experiences.
Perhaps one of our most successful recent efforts to increase communication
among parasitologist is our ASP Facebook. This has proven to be an easy way
to post announcements, ask questions, exchange ideas and have your research
to seen by a larger audience.
The widely respected The Journal of Parasitology (JP) is the most well know
feature of the ASP. It accepts a wide range of topics related to the study of
parasites, has expert reviewers and a rapid turnaround time for papers. The
authors publishing in JP represent the international community of researchers.
The Journal is published both in hard copy and electronically. One often over
looked feature is the savings in page costs for ASP members. For example, the
cost of publishing a 6 page paper:
Non-member: 3 free pages + $75/page = 3 X $75 = $225.
Member: 3 free pages + $45/page = 3 X $45 = $135.
This savings covers the cost of a year's membership. Regular membership
dues starting in 2010 are $85. Membership includes print and on-line copies
of the JP, discounts on new publications and services of interest to parasitologists.
Students receive reduced annual membership rates of $20.00 on-line copy only;
$35.00 print copy only; or $50.00 on-line and print copy. Students are eligible
for travel grants, research grants and awards for presentations given at the
meetings. In addition, members enjoy the scientific stimulation and cordiality
of fellow scientists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
Sincerely
The Membership Committee of ASP

World Federation of Parasitologists
Dear PARSA members,
I am writing to let you know about an important new web site for the World Federation of Parasitologists found at http://www.wfpnet.org.
The WFP Executive Board would very much like the new site to benefit from contributions from Parasitologists around the world and to become a central hub for those interested in Parasitology.
The site offers an opportunity to advertise Meetings, Educational Articles, Jobs and Opportunities, Slide Shows, Grants and Scholarships to a global audience. We would be delighted if you could send in details. Please apply (via Contact us) for a user name and password so that you can add information. If you have problems then please just contact me directly.
Also please do take a look at the Highlighted research articles (under Features) that will highlight important contributions to the discipline and papers of wide interest. If you know of an exciting paper do let me know.
Finally the link for our next International Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA XII) to be held in Melbourne, Australia in 2010 (15th-20th August) is now live!
Thank you so much for your support. Please give us feedback and suggestions to enable us to provide a Parasitology site that will be of benefit to all our members.
Best wishes
David Rollinson
President of the World Federation of Parasitologists
