Malaria: New Approaches to Understanding Host-Parasite Interactions

11 - 16 April, 2010
Copper Mountain Resort, Copper Mountain, Colorado

Malaria has entered a new era—a partially effective vaccine may be licensed in the not too distant future, and the genomes of host, parasite and vector are now widely available. Major advances have been made in understanding basic parasite cell biology and fundamental immunology, using rapidly evolving molecular genetic technologies for both host and parasite. Systems biology approaches also offer a new paradigm for interrogating complex host responses to a complex pathogen. Future progress will require greater integration of these technologies to elucidate parasite cell biology, host-parasite interactions, and the specific mechanisms that confer protection in our model systems and in nature. This symposium will bring together these new fields to examine those aspects of host and Plasmodium biology important for understanding immunity and pathogenesis.

Biology of Host-Parasite Interactions

June 27 - July 2, 2010
Salve Regina University, Newport, RI

The 2010 GRC conference on Biology of Host-Parasite Interactions will present the latest findings on the biology of protozoan parasites and their vectors, with special emphasis on human and animal diseases such as malaria, toxoplasmosis, African and American trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, trichomoniasis, giardiasis and entamoebiasis. The Conference will feature a wide range of topics, such as invasion and egress, systems biology, transmission, genetic and phenotypic variation, cell cycle, immune responses and novel intervention strategies.

The aim of the meeting is to bring together scientists from a variety of disciplines in order to define the current state of this dynamic field and to discuss and set future research agendas. This GRC conference offers the unique opportunity for junior investigators and graduate students to get together and exchange ideas with leaders in the field in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere at the Salve Regina University Campus, Newport. Some submitted abstracts will be selected for short talks. The success of this meeting would be considerably strengthened by the participation of students and post-docs who are strongly encouraged to apply. We are making a special effort to obtain funds to provide individuals from endemic countries with travel awards.

XIIth International Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA)

15th - 20th August, 2010
The Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre Melbourne, Australia

The XIIth International Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA) will be held in Melbourne, Australia, from 15-20th August 2010 at the new Exhibition and Convention Centre. All are invited to join the parasitology community at this exceptional facility that lies in the heart of Melbourne in close proximity to the scenic Yarra River and the associated parks, multicultural restaurants, cafes and bars. Parasites have an enormous impact not only in the environment but also on human and animal health. This conference will be an important forum for the dissemination and discussion of new findings in this rapidly expanding field. The theme of the congress is “Understanding the global impact of parasites-from genomes to function and disease” around which we are developing an exciting scientific program that will provide a dynamic platform for the vibrant and fruitful exchange of your new findings, research questions and state-of-the-art techniques. We are confident the diversity of themes that will be covered in this conference will encourage positive collaborations and abstracts will be solicited on all topics that span the enormous range of parasitology. The conference will provide the scientific depth required by including a range of plenary talks that will complement a larger number of oral presentations in parallel thematic sessions. The poster sessions will be a particularly important aspect of ICOPA XII with all presentations being displayed throughout the conference period and thematic oral sessions for selected posters. There will be several social programs around the poster displays to encourage discussion and collaborations. Competitive travel awards for students and postdoctoral scientists from developing countries will be offered and more details will be provided at a later date.
