LITERATURE LINKS
Atlas of medical parasitology

The A.M.P. was created for teaching purposes and during the development of the plan became an useful means for many scientists as a source of teaching aids. The A.M.P. received the citation of reliable sources such as Parasitology today and The Lancet, and is now listed in the "Internet Resources on Specific Infectious Diseases Topics" of the Mandell, Douglas and Bennet’s "Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases" Fifth Edition.

Society for Parasitology

The Australian Society for Parasitology was founded on the 19th of January 1964 to foster association of persons interested in parasitology, foster establishment and proper curation of collections of Australian parasites and by facilitating intercourse and discussion, promote investigation and advance the knowledge of parasitology. Today the Society present prizes for students studying parasitology in Universities in every State, its Newsletter, is eagerly anticipated for the latest gossip and events and an extensive range of travel awards and bursaries are given to students and overseas visiting lecturers.

Helminthological Society of Washington

The Helminthological Society of Washington, the prototype scientific organization for parasitological research in North America was founded in 1910 by a devoted group of parasitologists in Washington, D.C. Forging a niche in national and international parasitology over the past century, the Society focuses on comparative research, emphasizing taxonomy, systematics, ecology, biogeography and faunal survey inventory within a morphological and molecular foundation. Interdisciplinary and crosscutting, comparative parasitology links contemporary biodiversity studies with historical approaches to biogeography, ecology and coevolution within a cohesive framework. Taxonomic diversity represented in the pages of the Society's journal treats the rich helminth faunas in terrestrial and aquatic plants, invertebrates and vertebrates, as well as parasitic protozoa and arthropods. Parasitology, among the most integrative of the biological sciences, provides data critical to elucidation of general patterns of global biodiversity.

The Indian Society for Parasitology

Established in 1973 under the Societies Act XXI, 1860, The Indian Society for Parasitology (ISP) has the major objectives of bringing parasitologists of different disciplines under one umbrella to advance knowledge in this vital area concerning human and animal health. Over the years, the Society has carved a niche for itself by providing a common platform to research scientists, clinicians, field biologists, academicians and all others involved in parasitology or tropical medicine to share and exchange their knowledge and observations. The Society is affiliated with the World Federation of Parasitologists and has over 700 life members at present. A duly elected Executive Committee governs the affairs of the ISP according to its Bye Laws and Constitution.

Zoological Society of Southern Africa

The Society was founded on 11 March 1959 at the meeting of an Interim Committee appointed to investigate the possibility of forming a society to promote zoology and the interests of zoologists in southern Africa.  The meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Dr S H Skaife who was also the first President of the Society elected in 1960. The ZSSA publish its journal independently named African Zoology to reflect the scope of the journal. In addition to the Journal, the Society publishes a newsletter/bulletin. Initially this was on an irregular basis.  Through the years, however it become a very effective vehicle of communication within the Society and in 1990 the newsletter, better known as The Aardvark,  has appeared twice each year.

Medical Research Council

The MRC Board and Executive Management Committee have emphasised the need to sharpen the focus of the MRC on its core business: research. The MRC Research Strategy 2005 - 2010 has therefore been developed to ensure that the MRC's research activities are relevant, responsive and of high quality. This is essential if MRC research is to achieve, through research translation, its vision of 'building a healthy nation through research'.

SA RESEARCH PROGRAMMES

National Malaria Research Programme

Plasmodium is a group of one-celled animal parasites that lives on the red cells in the blood of many birds, reptiles and mammals. There are four human malaria species - P. falciparum, P. ovale, P. vivax and P. malariae. P. falciparum is by far the most dangerous. Unfortunately, it is also the most common in Africa. Malaria is transmitted by certain Anopheles mosquitoes. The parasite has to undergo a crucial development process in the mosquito, and this can only happen in certain mosquitos.
